Teach an Old Dog New Tricks – Site News

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. I aim to prove them wrong.

As I mentioned on the home page, I’m pretty much making this whole website thing up as I go. I’m not a web designer or anything; I’m a English teacher. I don’t know really what I’m doing. But that hasn’t stopped me yet. 😉

Like I tell my students, we have to make mistakes to learn and we have to keep learning. The world is changing, so I will teach this old dog some new tricks.

Something I learned today is about a little thing called SEO. I’d heard of it before, of course, but only peripherally. What I learned is that it is an important, multi-faceted part of building a website.

Apparently, Google and other search engines don’t like it when web sites don’t do certain things. Or, maybe it would be more accurate to say that they like websites that do certain things. I’m not sure which way it works. Do one of you know?

Anyway, being an amateur, I did basically none of those things. So Google and other search engines don’t really seem to like my website as it is.

Fortunately, it’s still early days. I have posted less than a dozen articles on the site so far, so fixing it should be fairly easy.

It will take some time, though, and that’s why I’m mentioning all of this. Since starting this site I have tried to upload 1-2 articles each week depending on how much free time I have. Going through each post and page to make them “SEO-optimized” or “SEO-friendly” will take the time that I was going to spend on the next couple of articles.

So I don’t think I’ll have time to post anything new this week. But, hopefully, the changes that I make will make the existing stuff look and read nicer. Assuming this optimization goes well and my classes and everything else goes according to plan, I’ll be back to posting new articles next week.
